The Smoke Alarm Inside You

1 min read

Your smoke alarm goes off because of burnt toast.

It cannot tell burnt toast from anything more serious. It detects a hint of smoke and goes off.

A nervous system can respond in a similar way. It is built to pick up on threat, so a tense email, a packed calendar or a message that landed wrong can set it off. The body reacts, and that can look like a faster heartbeat, a tight chest or a racing mind.

When an alarm is going off, the natural wish is for it to stop, and quickly.

So a person may reach for whatever quiets it fastest. A drink. Scrolling. Snacking. Online shopping. Anything that turns the volume down.

And it can work. The relief is real, and the body notices. Over time, it can learn which button stops the noise and start pressing it sooner and more often.

That is one way a habit can grow into an addiction. Not through weak willpower, but because the alarm keeps going off, the habit keeps quieting it, and the trigger rarely gets looked at.

Quieting the alarm and settling the system are two different things. The first is fast. The second is what can make the alarm go off less often.

So the next time you feel the pull toward your habit of choice, try asking: what is my alarm responding to right now?

What is your go-to way of quieting the alarm?
