The Popcorn Theory of Progress

The weekend just went by, and I spent part of it doing what many of us do when we want to switch off for a while - watching a movie with a bowl of popcorn.

Somewhere between the movie and reaching for another handful, a thought crossed my mind.

Have you ever noticed that popcorn doesn't all pop at the same time?

All the kernels go into the same pan.

Same heat.

Same environment.

Same amount of time.

Yet they don't pop together.

Some pop within seconds. Others take longer. And a few wait until the very end.

What's interesting is that if the kernels could compare themselves, the late ones would probably assume something was wrong.

"They've already popped. Why haven't I?"

People do this all the time.

Someone gets promoted at 25.

Someone else finds a meaningful relationship at 35.

Someone changes careers at 40.

Someone finally starts healing from something they've carried for years.

And because we're constantly exposed to other people's milestones, it's easy to mistake different timing for personal failure.

Many people quickly label themselves as "behind”.

Behind in life.

Behind in success.

Behind in relationships.

Behind in recovery.

But compared to what?

Progress isn't only about direction. It's also about timing. And timing is influenced by countless factors that we rarely see - life experiences, opportunities, responsibilities, setbacks, support systems, and sometimes simply being ready.

The first kernel to pop isn't the best kernel.

It's just the first one to pop.

The mistake many people make is deciding what their life means before their own process has had time to unfold.

Different timing doesn't mean less potential.

Sometimes it just means you're still warming up.
