Why do we say "What?"... and then answer the question before it's repeated?

"Can you send me that file?"

"What?... Oh, yeah, I'll send it."

Most people assume you didn't hear the question. But that's usually not the problem.

Your ears heard it.

Your brain was simply taking a fraction of a second longer to process what was said.

Speaking is fast. Understanding takes slightly longer.

By the time you say "What?", your brain has often already caught up, making the repeated question unnecessary.

It isn't always about poor hearing.

Sometimes it's just the way our brain processes spoken language.

It might seem like a tiny everyday habit, but it's a reminder that our brains are constantly working behind the scenes in ways we rarely notice.
